A small areal unit used in collecting and reporting US data. The first tracts were de-fined by the US Bureau of the census for its 1920 enumeration, and were drawn so as to approximate NATURAL AREAS OR NEIGHBOURHOODS wherever possible thereby providing valuable data for analysing city district characteristics. Many census authorities report data for similar small areas (in the UK the term used is ‘enumeration district’) but they are generally constructed on logistical grounds (ease of administration) rather than to meet analytical purposes Census Tract.
The Dictionary of Human Geography-র উক্ত সংজ্ঞা অনুযায়ী Census Tract হলো একটি ছোট এলাকা যেখান থেকে জনগণনা পরিসংখ্যান সংগ্রহ করা হয়। 1920 সালের জনগণনায় যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সেন্সাস ব্যুরো প্রথম জনগণনা এলাকা নির্দিষ্ট করেছিলো এবং যেখানে সম্ভবপর সেখানে তা প্রাকৃতিক এলাকা বা প্রতিবেশী এলাকার ভিত্তিতে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছিল। এতে করে নগর (ডিস্ট্রিক্ট) এলাকার সামাজিক-অর্থনৈতিক বৈশিষ্ট্য সম্পর্কে মূল্যবান তথ্য পাওয়া গিয়েছিল৷ অনেক জনগণনা কর্তৃপক্ষ অনুরূপ ছোট এলাকার জন্য পরিসংখ্যান সংগ্রহ করে। যুক্তরাজ্যে (United Kingdom) Census Tract-কে জনগণনা জেলা বলা হয়, কিন্তু ঐ দেশে বিশ্লেষণের উদ্দেশ্যের চেয়ে প্রশাসনিক সুবিধের জন্য জনগণনা জেলা চিহ্নিত করা হয়।
